REEL Music: Listening to the Movies
Eric Van Leuven
From its earliest days, music has breathed life into the movies. During filming in the “silent era,” a pianist played background music to help the actors “get in the mood.” The big silent era films were shipped to theaters with entire orchestral/piano scores, while a local musician would improvise for the comedy shorts. Today, we smile bigger, cry harder, and scream louder thanks to the film score, and will often remember it as warmly as the movie itself. I am drawn to scores featuring the piano; on this CD, I have recreated a few of my recent favorites… some on piano alone, and others with an “orchestral score,” using digitally sampled software instruments. It is like having an entire orchestra/choir at my fingertips! —Eric
